Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy, commonly known as keyhole or arthroscopic procedure, is a procedure conducted on the joint under which the injury is inspected and treated.

Orthopedic surgeons create a tiny incision on the surface to conduct this procedure and implant a pencil-sized structure within the skin, with a lens at the tip. This endoscope is used to light the affected region and magnify it. Later, the light that has just been inserted through the skin is transferred to the end of the arthroscopy by fiber optics.

Such an arthroscopy helps a person to see the bone, cartilage, ligaments, and kneecap in a magnified picture. Using this, the physician may assess the kind of damage and may continue accordingly with the arthroscopic operation.

Why is it important ?

If the surgeon has finished the patient’s detailed medical history, clinical assessment, X-rays, MRI, etc., an anthroscope is required to render the final diagnosis. Joints, ligaments, or cartilage can be damaged by different diseases and accidents. During the arthroscopic examination, the following conditions can be identified

How to do arthroscopic surgery ?

While arthroscopy is minimally invasive and needs less healing time than open-surgery, depending on the severity of the issue, it also requires the use of general/spinal/local anesthesia.

To mount the anthroscope, one of more minor incisions may be created on the skin to see the areas of the joint. Corrective surgery is done, once specified, using specific tools that are implanted into the joints. Arthroscopy has emerged to be not only a diagnostic method with the advancement of improved instrumentation, but also an important recovery tool for certain accidents such as meniscal tears in the knee etc.
